Summary

The amount of children experiencing symptoms of anxiety has been steadily increasing over time. According to CDC.gov, the amount of children “ever having been diagnosed with anxiety increased from 5.5% in 2007 to 6.4% in 2011–2012.” As mental health professionals working with children, it is therefore imperative to understand the impact that anxiety has on children and learn how to adequately treat an anxiety diagnosis in a child. Understanding and treating anxiety can help prevent the systemic issues that it can cause due to the understanding that “untreated anxiety disorders are linked to depression, school failure and a two-fold increase in risk for substance use disorder” (Childmind.org 2022). During this course, the presenter will utilize case studies to differentiate the various types of anxiety disorders impacting children. The presenter will also introduce strategies through role play and visual examples that can be implemented to help overcome anxiety symptoms.
